Precision provides patients with customized joint replacement surgery for restored mobility

Modesto, Calif. – Doctors Medical Center is now offering OMNIBotics, an advanced robotic-assisted treatment option for total knee replacement. This innovative total knee replacement solution is designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration.

The OMNIBotics procedure utilizes advanced software and instrumentation to tailor each procedure to the patient’s unique anatomy in order to optimize implant fit and alignment. “Bone morphing” technology eliminates the need for costly CT scans or MRIs and allows the surgeon to perform “virtual” surgery on a digital model before any bone is cut. A robotic cutting guide is then used by the surgeon to make the planned bone resections, helping to ensure accuracy. The surgeon maintains control and decision-making regarding the total knee replacement while providing a customized, patient-specific surgery.

The new system also allows for a less invasive surgical technique, compared to traditional knee replacement surgery, which may provide a quicker recovery.

For patients like 67-year-old Susan Johnson of Escalon, the surgery got her back to doing everyday things that used to cause her severe knee pain.

“I’m now doing housework without any problems. Doing laundry and the dishes is so much better now. Plus, I’m cooking dinner again. I used to have to stand on one leg while cooking because the pain was so bad,” Johnson explained.

Johnson said before her knee replacement surgery with Dr. Pistel, she was always concerned about falling and she was simply fed up with the pain.

“It got to the point where I was going to physical therapy and getting my cortisone shots, but nothing was working,” Johnson said. “When I got an X-ray to see if I was a knee replacement candidate, it looked like a giant hole on the inside of my leg because of the lack of scar tissue. Dr. Pistel said, ‘It’s surgery time.’”

Johnson had her knee replaced with the new OMNIBotics technology and was released from the hospital the next day.

“I was surprised how quickly after surgery I noticed a difference in my knee pain and my abilities. The physical therapist got me up and moving. I could even do the stairs,” Johnson explained. “I’m so happy I went forward with the surgery.”
