COVID-19 and Pregnancy

Does pregnancy increase the risk for COVID-19?

Pregnancy and pre-existing medical conditions as well as being overweight seem to have an increased risk for COVID-19. When severe disease develops, it also seems that pregnant women require care in intensive care units more often when compared to non-pregnant women of reproductive age.

Can I pass COVID-19 to my unborn or newborn baby?

It is still unsure whether COVID-19 can be passed from the mother to the fetus or baby during pregnancy or delivery.

Can I hold my newborn baby if I have COVID-19?

Yes. Close contact and breastfeeding helps your baby to thrive. Just make sure you wash your hands before and after you touch your baby. It is also advised that you wear a mask during any contact with your baby.

What can you do?

To reduce your risk for COVID-19:

  • Wear a mask whenever you go out in public.
  • Limit contact with others and practice social distancing in public places.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water often for 20 seconds or sanitize your hands with an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
