One could say that Pat Fontes has spent a lifetime at DMC. In fact to some, 40 years is a lifetime. But to Pat, 40 years ago seems just like yesterday.
It was in September 1964 when Pat Fontes was first hired at Doctors Hospital as a 3rd semester nursing student. Pat has held a variety of positions here at the facility, which include Staff RN, Charge Nurse, Educator, Relief House Supervisor and Department Manager.
Today, Pat is the Director of Nursing Support Functions and oversees Nursing Administration, Staff Office, Endoscopy, Dialysis and the Float Pool. Pat welcomes the daily challenges with quiet resolve and determination. She has always been a team player and acknowledges, "I have learned from everybody in my career. Each individual brings their own unique strengths to the workplace."
Pat has watched the hospital grow into the medical center that it is today. Through it all, Pat still believes that the most rewarding job for her was being a bedside nurse and working one-on-one with the patients. In fact, many people say that Pat is an inspiration to young nursing students. When asked about that, Pat replies, "I love being a nurse advocate. I was given the opportunity to grow and learn many things throughout my nursing career. I want to give others that same opportunity."
In addition to being part of the first graduating class from the Nursing Program at MJC, Pat also received her Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Health Care Administration. She holds a certification in Nursing Administration and is part of the Association of California Nurse Leaders.
Pat has been awarded the Clinical Excellence Honorary Award and also received the Target 100 Northern Star Award from Tenet. Even with these two prestigious awards, Pat says her most memorable recognition came at her 25th anniversary. It was then that the nursing leaders had a celebration and gave her the Lladro Nurse figurine. It is the recognition by her peers that she will always hold as a special memory.
Pat's home life has also flourished throughout years. She has a daughter, son-in-law and three beautiful grandchildren. Just as her own mother inspired her, Pat's daughter has also followed in her mother's footsteps and is a registered nurse.
What has kept Pat here for 40 years? Quite simply, the people. "DMC has become by second family," Pat said. "I have been blessed working with everyone here."
We thank Pat for her forty years of service and look forward to many more years to come!
