Service League of Doctors Medical Center

The Service League of Doctors Medical Center is a volunteer group of over 150 members who provide over 24,000 hours of service each year and fund scholarships and health-related projects.  The Service League is committed to providing competent and compassionate service to DMC staff, patients and visitors, while providing an avenue for individual enrichment.

When you join the Service League, you become a member of a very proud and service-oriented organization founded in 1963.  As a member, you will have the opportunity to use your special abilities and share your individual talents with others.  It is our hope that the time and creative effort you give will increase your sense of doing something worthwhile, stimulate your thinking and enlarge your circle of friends.

Volunteers contribute greatly to the hospital by caring and sharing.  They in turn, receive some opportunities and benefits:

  • Make new friends
  • Feel needed and wanted
  • Develop new interests
  • Share your talents
  • Complimentary meals when working
  • Flu shots
  • Community service
  • Opportunities to participate in DMC activities

We are currently seeking new Service League members who have the time to work at least two 3.5 hour shifts per month, and who possess a willingness to spread joy and encouragement while doing so.  All Service League members receive a 25-hour training orientation in the areas of service they have selected.  Service opportunities include:

  • Cuddler - Provide support to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit infants and their parents by giving human contact to nurture the infants under supervision of licensed nurses.
  • Emergency Room - Provide comfort to patients and their families and assist staff as needed.
  • Escort - Greet and help newly admitted patients to their rooms, as well as assist discharged patients, by wheelchair, to the outside pickup area.
  • Floater - Run errands for hospital departments as requested and deliver flowers and mail to patients.
  • Gift Box - Volunteers operate this lovely area of the hospital as the Service League's important fundraising source used for health related community projects and scholarships.
  • Maternity - Provide services to the patients in the Women and Children's Center and run errands for the staff.
  • West Tower (Neuro, Oncology and Critical Care) - Provide assistance to visitors and staff in these departments and provide wheelchair escort to discharged patients.
  • Outpatient Lobby Receptionist and O.P. Floater - Provide information and assistance to visitors entering the hospital through this area.  Run errands for departments in the area.
  • Pharmacy - Assist with clerical duties, sort and restock medications.
  • Pre-Op - Work with the Pre-Op Care Unit nurses, patients and their families.  Discharge patients and assist staff with various duties.
  • Reception - Visitors to the hospital are greeted by volunteers who assist with duties at the Information Desk in the main lobby.
  • Reception-Floater - Provide extra assistance to lobby services.

Sometimes a smile is all that is needed to brighten someone's day.  Give to others, and yourself, by caring and sharing as a Volunteer.  Please call (209) 576-3687 to apply or e-mail sandi.oneill@tenethealth.com for additional information.
