   Stanislaus Family Medicine Residency Program

Doctors Medical Center is proud to host one of the Family Medicine residency training sites in the country. Our resident physicians come from medical schools all over the United States to learn the specialty of Family Medicine.

Some frequently asked questions about residencies and training hospitals:

  • What are resident physicians?
After four years of medical school, young physicians choose their specialty and go to training hospitals across the nation to begin their specialty education. Training programs usually last from three to six years, depending on the specialty; family medicine residency lasts three years. Physician-teachers appointed by a university medical school supervise all resident physicians. All of our residency teachers are clinical faculty with U.C. Davis School of Medicine.

  • What is the specialty of Family Medicine?
Family Medicine is the specialty that cares for most of the primary medical needs of a community. Family doctors take care of children, adolescents, adults and grandparents; all the members of your family.  Many family doctors provide pregnancy and delivery care as well.  Providing primary care usually takes place in a medical clinic, but family doctors also care for patients in nursing homes, hospitals and even make house calls.

  • Why does DMC have a residency training program?
The Stanislaus Family Medicine Residency Program has a thirty-year history of caring for Modesto. More than sixty physicians graduates have stayed in Stanislaus County, providing excellent care to thousands of families in our community. Doctors Medical Center elected to continue this proud legacy when the county hospital closed in the late 1990s.

  • Will I have a resident physician caring for me?
The family medicine residency already has a large population of patients that it cares for. If your physician sees you through one of the many Stanislaus Health Services Agency clinics, then you will likely have a resident physician as a part of your care team. Remember, when you see a resident physician, you are actually having two physicians care for you: the resident physician and a qualified faculty physician-teacher.
