Volunteer with Us

Volunteers at Doctors Medical Center provide thousands of hours of compassionate service every year to help enrich the experience of patients, their families and hospital staff. There’s always room for more dedicated volunteers with the Service League of Doctors Medical Center.

The service-oriented organization was founded in 1963. The group funds scholarships and health-related projects.

You can volunteer at our hospital in some of these ways:

  • Communication/Floater – Deliver mail and newspapers to hospital units and run errands as requested.
  • Cuddler – Provide support to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) infants and their parents by providing human contact to the infants under the supervision of licensed nurses.
  • Escort – Greet and help newly admitted patients to their rooms, as well as assist discharged patients, by wheelchair, to the outside pickup area.
  • Floater – Floater volunteers run errands in the hospital as directed from the Main Lobby and Information Desk, and assist Escort Services as needed.
  • Gift Box – Volunteers operate the hospital gift shop, which is the Service League’s primary source of funds used for scholarships.
  • Maternity – Provide services to the patients in the Women & Children’s Center and run errands for the staff.
  • Pre-Admission Center Receptionist – Provide information and assistance to patients and families in the Pre-Admission Center and prepare packets for the nursing staff.
  • Pre-Operative Care Unit – Work with nurses and staff. Discharge patients by wheelchair and assist staff with various duties.
  • Reception – Greet visitors to the hospital and assist with duties at the Main Lobby Information Desk.
  • Telephone at Front Desk – Answer phone calls and take messages to inform the Floaters and Escort staff of service requests.

Become a Hospital Volunteer

Doctors Medical Center is always looking to add new members to the volunteer family to assist patients, visitors, nurses and staff. All Service League members receive a training orientation in the areas of service. Please call (209) 576-3687 for additional information.

Volunteer Requirements

Volunteers must be 25 years of age or older, and able to commit to one year of volunteering. Volunteers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Tuberculosis (TB) testing will be provided by the hospital. Masks must be worn at all times while in the hospital. A background check and a hospital orientation are required for all volunteers. Please note: Popular service options may not have immediate needs and volunteers will be assigned in areas that need assistance.

Become a Junior Volunteer

In addition to the adult volunteer program, Doctors Medical Center also has a Junior Volunteer program for high school students. The volunteers work a four-hour shift once a week and learn responsibility as they gain experience and confidence for the future.

Students in 9th-11th grade are eligible to apply and must commit to completing one four-hour shift per week for a minimum of one year. The application process opens twice a year, typically in the spring and in the fall. For updates on when applications become available, please follow Doctors Medical Center on Facebook and Instagram.

If you have additional questions on the Junior Volunteer Program, please call (209) 576-3687.
