Doctors Medical Center Invites Mallgoers to Test Drive Robotic Surgical System

July 22, 2008

MODESTO, Calif. – Mallgoers will have an opportunity to test drive a real robot courtesy of Doctors Medical Center. People of all ages will be able to test their surgical skill on “Leo,” Doctors Medical Center’s sophisticated, minimally invasive da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System at the Vintage Faire Mall, located at Sisk and Dale Roads in Modesto, on Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

The public can vie for prizes including pedometers and mall gift certificates while they learn first hand how robotic surgery can be performed with an incision the size of a dime. Doctors Medical Center will also have Leo coloring sheets and crayons on-site for children to enter in its “Give Leo Color” coloring contest, where children can enter to win free movie passes good for one movie. The winning entries will also be displayed on the hospital’s Web site and throughout Doctors Medical Center during the month of August. Any student in preschool through fifth grade can enter between now and Aug. 15, and a winner from each grade will be selected. Entries should be sent to:

With the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, physicians at Doctors Medical Center can perform gynecological and urology surgeries resulting in less pain, shorter recovery times and the potential for better outcomes, thus allowing patients to transition back to their everyday life more quickly and easily.

The da Vinci Robotic Surgical System puts a computer in between a surgeon’s hands and the tips of electromechanically enhanced micro instruments. During this type of surgery, the surgeon is comfortably seated at a console a few feet away from the patient while the system seamlessly translates his hand, wrist and finger movements into precise actions of the surgical instruments inside the patient. Throughout the entire process, the surgeon views an actual image of the surgical site, while operating in real-time through tiny incisions.
